   Brief History of

Holy Trinity Church

EARLY in the year 1839, certain gentlemen in West Bromwich (which at that date a town of 20,000 inhabitants) met together to consider the adoption of measures for the erection of a new church near Spon Lane. Having obtained the approval and permission of the Lord Bishop of Lichfield and the Earl of Dartmouth, this committee adopted plans for building, and the Foundation-stone of Holy Trinity Church was laid on April 22nd, 1840. The dedication of the Church, took place on June 28th, 1841, while the ecclesiastical parish of Holy Trinity was formed in 1842. At that time the east end and the south side overlooked fields, and there exists a letter asking Mr. Silvester if he would like a curbstone or a grass edging to the paths leading to the Church. These paths became Trinity Street and Trinity Road. There is also a reason to believe that the present big gates were originally situated about half-way up what is now Trinity Road, a long drive leading from them to the Church. They were moved to their present position much later. There were no street lamps at this time, and a small boy had the duty of lighting candle lamps down Trinty Street on the dark nights, for which he received sixpence a week. Later, that boy became Clerk to the Church, a position he held for many years. That “young boy” was Mr. Emmanuel Whitehouse. Gas was introduced into the Church in 1846, previous to which it had been lighted by candles.Holy Trinity was also the first Church of England in the town to be lighted by electricity.
